WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. -
BMW of North America announced Tuesday that it conducting two separate recalls that, when combined, affect about 150,800 units.
With regards to the larger of the two recalls — which is an emissions recall — the company said it told the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that it plans to recall certain 2007 through 2010 BMW models with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines for a potential problem with the high-pressure fuel pump.
Each of the vehicles has the automaker’s High Precision Injection direct fuel-injection system.
BMW has also gone to the California Air Resources Board seeking their approval to do this recall.
“Symptoms include long-crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the ‘Service Engine Soon’ light,” officials explained. “In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a Safe Mode accompanied by a tone and the illumination of the ‘Engine Malfunction’ light.”
They added that depending on the individual vehicle’s service history, replacing the high-pressure fuel pump and/or updating the software may be necessary.
The company indicated that the recall possibly impacts 130,000 units. Of these vehicles, a new high-pressure fuel pump is likely needed in 40,000, officials noted.
The group of 130,000 units includes the following models:
—335i units from model years 2007-2010.
—135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes. These are all from the 2008 through 2010 model years.
—Z4 Roadster sDrive35i from model-years 2009 and 2010.
Moving on to explain the smaller recall — which is separate from the aforementioned action and is a safety recall — BMW told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of its plans to recall about 20,800 X5 Sports Activity models featuring the normally-aspirated inline six-cylinder engines.
These are all from model-year 2008 and are being recalled to replace the low-pressure fuel pump.
“In this case, should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes although both the steering and the brakes remain operational,” officials explained.
BMW noted that there have been no reports of injuries with regards to either issue.
For both issues, the company is planning to send out First Class mail to affected owners soon to have them make service appointments at a BMW dealer for the appropriate work.
