TrueCar.com: Hispanic Buyers Prefer Import Brands
For dealers who have large Hispanic population in their market, TrueCar.com’s latest study sheds some light on what specific brands and models that most appeal to these potential buyers.
The site’s study showed import brands and models dominated the Top 10 list. TrueCar.com pointed out Hispanic buyers made up 7 percent of all new-vehicle retail purchases in the U.S. last year.
Study orchestrators discovered Hispanic buyers preferred Toyota most, compiling 19.5 percent of this purchaser segment. Next came Honda (13.7 percent) and Nissan (11.9 percent), followed by a pair of domestic brands to round out the top five, Chevrolet (9.4 percent) and Ford (9.3 percent).
TrueCar.com’s study also indicated eight of the top 10 models purchased by Hispanic buyers were Japanese. The top five vehicles purchased were the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Ford F Series.
However, brands — showing sales above 1,000 units to be considered — with the highest growth among Hispanic buyers year-over-year included a few non-import brands. The leading brands in this segment of the site’s study were Buick, Hyundai, Cadillac, Kia and GMC.
Drilling down into 2010 data even further, TrueCar.com found that among Hispanic buyers age 18-34 when compared to all buyers from that age demographic, Mitsubishi was the most popular brand, followed by Nissan, Toyota, Suzuki and Honda.
Furthermore, the most popular vehicles last among Hispanic buyers age 18-34 when compared again to all buyers in that age group, showed the Nissan Sentra at the top of the list, followed by the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Nissan Pathfinder and Scion tC.
“The Hispanic market is very critical for automakers, being the fastest growing minority group in the U.S.,” insisted Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insights at TrueCar.com.
“The domestic automakers have some work ahead of them as the Asian brands have a stronghold on Hispanic car buyers,” Toprak added.
