WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. -

September was a particularly impressive month for the domestic automakers in the certified pre-owned market, as the Big 3 managed to collectively increase their CPO sales output by more than 15 percent year-over-year, according to Autodata Corp.

They also grabbed four additional points of market share, with domestic certified sales leaping to just a shade under 54,000.

Overall, there were 53,978 certified sales between three Detroit automakers last month, a 15.3-percent increase from September 2012. Through three quarters, domestics have moved 533,391 CPO units for a 22.3-percent gain this year.

In September, the Big 3 accounted for 34.3 percent of all CPO sales, up from 30.3 percent a year ago. Year-to-date, domestics are taking a 33.6-percent share, up nicely from 22.3 percent through three quarters of 2012.

Leading the sales front last month was General Motors, which pulled in 25,999 CPO sales on Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac and Saturn models. This marked a 20.4-percent increase and put the year-to-date total at 258,177 units (up 22.9 percent).

The Cadillac CPO program reported 1,281 sales for a 1.3-percent gain, with nine-month sales at 13,756 units (up 10.5 percent).

Over at Ford, its brands CPO sales reached 17,861 units last month (up 12.5 percent), putting the year-to-date sum at 170,397 sales (up 32.9 percent).

The Ford/Lincoln brands sold 16,050 CPO units in September for a 13.1-percent hike, and have sold 153,965 units in nine months, a 35.9-percent increase.

Monthly figures for Lincoln came in at 1,811 CPO sales (7.9-percent increase), with annual sales reaching 16,432 units (up 10 percent).

Chrysler Group sold 8,837 certified units in September between its Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands, which marked a 9.2-percent hike. In three quarters of 2013, it sold 91,050 CPO vehicles (up 6.6 percent).

Breaking those figures down, Chrysler sold 1,711 CPO vehicles in September (up 8.7 percent) and 18,880 year-to-date (up 12.6 percent; Dodge moved 4,052 units last month (up 3.3 percent) and 42,047 so far this year (up 2.9 percent); and Jeep certified sales reached 3,074 units for the month (up 18.5 percent) and 30,123 (up 8.4 percent) through three quarters.

None of the aforementioned results include Fiat, which sold 27 CPO units in September and 219 in nine months of 2013.
