A new study shows drivers in Manitoba need to make sure their collision insurance is up to date.
Preszler Injury Lawyers’ analysis of Transport Canada’s 2022 data on road traffic injury reports found Manitoba has the highest rate of injuries, which the law firm said shows its residents have the greatest need for vehicle insurance.
The province, which has approximately 951,900 drivers, recorded an estimated 7,251 injuries — a rate of 786.4 injuries per 100,000 licensed drivers. That’s 85.4% higher than the national rate of 424.1.
Preszler Injury Lawyers said the elevated injury rate underscores the heightened risk drivers face in Manitoba, making collision insurance “a crucial form of protection for those navigating the province’s roads.”
Saskatchewan was close behind, with 681.3 injuries per 100,000 licensed drivers — 60.6% above the national average — followed by Nova Scotia at 636.9 and Newfoundland and Labrador at 539.1.
The study found Ontario was the safest province in terms of auto accident injuries, recording 319.4 injuries per 100,000 licensed drivers, almost half of Manitoba’s rate and 24.8% below the national average. British Columbia was next with a rate of 334.5.

“The local Canadian governments and drivers have a role to play in reducing the risk of road traffic injuries,” the law firm said. “The governments must focus on improving road surface conditions, ensuring clear signage and implementing better traffic management systems.
“Additionally, it is crucial for all drivers to secure adequate collision insurance regardless of their location to protect against the financial impacts of potential accidents.”
