Toyota continued its domination of Canadian Black Book’s Best Residual Value Awards, remaining the only automaker to claim the Overall Brand Award for cars in the program’s four-year history.

Toyota also won the brand award in the SUV/truck category for the third consecutive year, and led all brands with five wins among the 16 model-level awards.

The awards are based on forecasts of a vehicle’s value as a percentage of its original MSRP after four years.

Canadian Black Book announced the winners Thursday at the 2025 Canadian International Show in Toronto.

Porsche repeated as the top luxury brand, led by the 718 Boxster, which topped all models with a projected four-year residual value of 70.40% of MSRP to win the luxury sports car award. GMC took the zero-emission vehicle brand award and Genesis was named the most improved brand.

Toyota’s Land Cruiser (69.60%) and Tundra (68.00%) had the best residual values among non-luxury vehicles, to win in the mainstream midsize/full-size SUV and full-size pickup segments. Other Toyota winners included the Corolla (mainstream car), RAV4 (mainstream compact/subcompact SUV) and GR Supra (mainstream sports car).

Porsche earned three model awards and Kia won two segments, with Volvo, Ford, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and GMC each taking one.

CBB said residual values have shown a “consistent trend of leveling off” over the past two years as new car supply returns to form, noting the average residual for the 2025 awards winners of 60.93% was down significantly from the 2024 model year average of 66.28% and 67.61% in 2023.

CBB said there has “a noticeable shift in consumer preference” toward SUVs with the expansion of categories to encompass crossovers in various segments, which has contributed to a widening gap between truck/SUV residual values and those of the car segments, currently at 5.08%.

Still, residual values for trucks and SUVs are also down from 67.50% in 2024 to 63.53% now. The average residual value for cars stands at 58.45%, dropping from 64.08% in 2024.
