CARY, N.C. -

As we turn the page on another quarter of 2021, here’s a rundown of how the certified pre-owned vehicle market is faring in Canada, based on sales reports shared by automakers.

Starting with Mercedes-Benz Canada, the company said that within its pre-owned division, CPO penetration during Q3 reached a record quarterly rate at 91.8%.

That rate beat the year-ago figure by 6.3 percentage points.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz sold 4,460 used vehicles during the quarter, which was a 7.4% year-over-year drop. Included in that volume was 4,094 CPO sales.

Next up, Nissan moved 1,162 certified vehicles in September, down from 1,185 a year ago. Year-to-date sales are up 8.5% through nine months at 8,934 certified units sold.

Infiniti moved 135 CPO vehicles last month, compared to 160 in September 2020. Through three quarters, Infiniti has sold 1,353 certified vehicles, which is up 12% year-over-year.

Joel Gregory, who heads up CPO for Nissan and Infiniti in Canada, said in emailed comments: “Certainly expectations were higher, given the surge in used-car pricing and network’s lack of new-vehicle supply.”

At Hyundai Auto Canada Corp., last month marked its strongest September ever, as Hyundai dealers moved 1,213 CPO vehicles. This was the seventh consecutive time that certified sales have been at a record high for that specific month.

“Despite the short supply of used vehicles, our Hyundai dealers keep pushing the limits of what is possible with our CPO program,” said Charles Plewes, who is manager of CPO and remarketing national sales, in emailed comments.
