SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Last week, California Assemblyman Mike Feuer introduced legislation designed to target the sale and collection practices common to buy-here, pay-here dealers, according to a report in the LA Times.

"I am very concerned about practices which target the most vulnerable consumers in their most desperate moments. These dealers are exploiting people's desperation, and we want to put a stop to that," the paper quoted Feuer as saying.

The proposed legislation is AB 1447. Two other California lawmakers, Sen. Ted Lieu and Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, also apparently plan to introduce bills that target BHPH as well, according to the paper.

Interestingly, BHPH dealers will fall under the authority of the new Consumer Financial Protection Agency, which of course, President Barack Obama just named a head to in a recession appointment.

The newspaper claims the local lawmakers are responding to a series it ran on the BHPH industry. However, according to Ken Shilson, founder of the National Alliance of Buy-Here, Pay-Here Dealers, the LA Times series was not an accurate portrayal.
