GMAC Completes Sale of Insurance Business
DETROIT — GMAC Financial Services announced Monday that it has completed the sale of its U.S. consumer property and casualty insurance business.
The company noted that its dealer-related insurance business, which includes extended service contracts and insurance for dealer inventories, has not been impacted by the transaction. Officials indicated that this business "remains a strategic component of GMAC's automotive services platform."
The operations that were sold to American Capital Acquisition Corp. include U.S. automobile, commercial vehicle, motorcycle and recreational vehicle insurance offerings.
"This transaction is a part of GMAC's effort to refocus resources on strategic operations and restore financial performance," GMAC executives said in a statement.
Meanwhile, ACAC noted that the insurance business it has acquired will continue normal daily operations while the company identifies development initiatives to advance its competitive position.
"GMAC Insurance's headquarters will remain in Winston-Salem, N.C., and effective immediately, the company will transition leadership from interim chief executive officer Mary Hennessey to Larry Pentis, who joins GMAC Insurance from The Commerce Group, where he ran all operations outside of Massachusetts," ACAC executives explained in a statement.
Michael Karfunkel, chairman of ACAC, pointed out, "Larry is a seasoned and successful insurance professional with over 27 years of experience. Larry has a collaborative leadership style emphasizing open and honest communication."
Also, as part of the deal, GMAC Insurance Personal Lines retained the right to use the name GMAC Insurance in relation to its remaining insurance operations for some time.
Officials said GMAC Insurance will continue to be utilized in all operations while a strategic review of brand marketing is conducted. Karfunkel said the transition to a new company will not impact existing procedures such as customer service, sales and claims operations. All existing policies and coverage will remain in "full force," and the company will maintain all agency and affinity group relationships.
ACAC also noted that the GMAC Insurance Dealer Products & Services group, in addition to other international personal lines of insurance operations were not included in the transaction.
