HOUSTON — Leadership of the National Alliance of Buy-Here,
Pay-Here Dealers called the inaugural East Coast BHPH Conference in Atlanta a
success.
Officials highlighted that approximately that 800 operators,
exhibitors and industry experts from across the U.S. and Canada attended the
three-day event. Other notable attendees included two senior members of the
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as well as representatives from the
American Financial Services Association, the American Collectors Association
and other industry groups.
NABD founder and president Ken Shilson recapped the dual
track educational program — designed for both new and experienced operators —
focused on the three major BHPH challenges of today: compliance, inventory
acquisition and capital.
"I believe that attendees left with the knowledge to face
these challenges successfully in the months ahead," Shilson stated.
Conference highlights included a presentation by Melinda
Zabritski, director of automotive credit for Experian Automotive, who provided
new insights into the size and breadth of the BHPH industry.
"The Experian data shows that BHPH plays a vital role in
providing transportation to millions of Americans who would otherwise not be
able to afford a vehicle," Shilson explained.
Other highlights included presentations by prominent
attorneys Tom Hudson and Keith Whann. The program also incorporated interactive
sessions with industry attorneys Lisa Kelly, Rick Loftsgard and David
Sicay-Perrow, who answered numerous compliance and bankruptcy-related
questions.
A panel on inventory acquisition moderated by Auto
Remarketing and SubPrime Auto Finance News publisher Bill Zadeits included
representatives from Manheim, Ally Auto Remarketing (SmartAuction) and ADESA,
who offered attendees innovative ways to locate the inventory dealers are
seeking at competitive costs.
Attendees also offered best practice suggestions for
sourcing vehicles during these interactive discussions.
Eight concurrent workshops covered topics including tips on how
to succeed, add-ons, accounting/tax strategies, compliance, customer insights,
capital, advanced skip-tracing, telephone techniques, handling tax refunds,
portfolio analysis and credit scoring. The program also included interactive
panels where attendees could ask best underwriting and collection questions of
some of the nation's most successful operators.
NABD also released and device providers discussed the
results of a national survey covering payment devices and their impact on the
BHPH consumer. This survey showed that the devices overwhelmingly benefit the
operators that use them.
The results of the entire survey are posted on the NABD website
at www.bhphinfo.com.
In addition, NABD announced a joint initiative with the National
Independent Automobile Dealer Association to provide BHPH Master Dealer
Certification training. Shilson noted that more details of this program will be
released in the future.
A sold out exhibit hall included more than 80 sponsoring
exhibitors who networked with attendees during a luncheon, two welcome
receptions and coffee breaks.
NABD intends to offer audio recordings of all the sessions.
To purchase, call NABD headquarters at (832) 767-4759. The recordings will also
include a disk with all PowerPoint presentations during the three-day
conference.
Furthermore, NABD announced it will hold a two-day Dealer
Academy for both new and experienced BHPH operators on May 15–16 at the
Venetian/Palazzo in Las Vegas. This year's program was sold out and provided
in-depth training on how to profitably run a BHPH operation today.
The 14th annual NABD BHPH Conference will be held on May 17–18
also at the Venetian/Palazzo immediately following the Dealer Academy.
