TORRANCE, Calif. -

The ongoing challenges in the supply chain in Japan given the breadth of damage left by the quake and tsunami have led Honda headquarters to reach out to its U.S. and Canadian counterparts asking them to make “temporary adjustments” to reduce production levels.

According to an updated statement from the automaker, “As a result of interruptions in parts supplies from Japan in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami, Honda informed associates at its U.S. and Canadian auto plants today that the company will implement a strategy of temporary adjustments that will reduce daily production levels.

The “temporary adjustments” began Wednesday and the company says they will vary from plant-to-plant based on parts availability.

"Honda is making every effort to keep plants operating without extensive interruptions," management stressed.

However, the company also noted that more than 80 percent of Honda and Acura products sold in the U.S. are produced in North America, and the vast majority of parts are sourced in the region.
