FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. -

To drive service dollars, Hyundai’s Chicago dealers recently held a weekend-long Groupon promotion where shoppers could receive an oil change, inspection and tire rotation for $29.

Customers could take advantage of the deal at 10 different stores in the Chicago area.

Hyundai revealed that 1,323 shoppers utilized the Groupon, meaning the average number of new-service leads generated for each store was more than 130.

The automaker is planning to monitor these shoppers as they cash in the coupons and sign up for appointments. Hyundai hopes to gauge the long-term benefits of the deal and plans to discuss its findings with its dealer body in a case study on innovative business-development tactics.

“We’re always looking for innovative ways to build dealers’ service business. Our Central Region team and a number of Chicago dealers recognized the power of Groupon to offer a compelling deal and generate new service leads,” explained  Brian O’Malley, general manager of Hyundai Motor America’s Central region.

“Based on initial response, we can clearly call the pilot program a success in driving traffic," he added. "If the long-term results are as encouraging as the initial data and dealers are supportive, we’ll certainly look at other ways to use Groupon in the future.”
