SANTA MONICA, Calif. -

On Monday, Edmunds.com rolled out its awards spotlighting the 2011 model-year vehicles with the lowest five-year ownership costs, and two brands, in particular, stood out from their peers.

Across the 23 categories of the 2011 Lowest True Cost to Own Awards, Honda took five spots and Ford notched four honors.

Breaking it down, Honda was represented by the following vehicles: Accord (which won two categories — coupes $25,000-$35,000 and sedans $20,000-$30,000), Civic Hybrid (hybrids), Ridgeline (large light duty truck) and Pilot (SUV $35,000-$45,000).

Meanwhile, Ford took top categorical honors for the following vehicles: Ranger (compact truck), Flex (wagon over $35,000), Fiesta (sedan under $20,000) and the Transit Connect (van/minivan).

In some more good news for domestics, Chevrolet won two spots, as did Cadillac. These were the only other brands that took more than one category.
Acura Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Mini, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen each were recognized in one spot.

“One of the key factors that pushed many of this year’s award winners over the top was their free maintenance plans, which can save car owners hundreds or even thousands of dollars over a five-year period,” explained Danny Zhou, Edmunds’ senior director of data products and operations.

“The 2011 Volkswagen CC, for example, edged past its closest competitors in the sedan $30,000-$40,000 category in large part because it offers free maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles,” he added.
