SANTA MONICA, Calif. -

Based on September new-vehicle sales, TrueCar discovered the average fuel economy has grown on vehicles consumers are purchasing. According to the company, the TrueMPG increased to 22.0 miles per gallon from 21.4 mpg in the same month a year ago.

The September reading also represents an uptick from August when the TrueMPG stood at 21.7 mpg.

“Hyundai and Nissan were the biggest gainers in average fuel economy gains this month,” explained Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insights at TrueCar.com.

“Some of the biggest gains came from light cars with almost a 10-percent increase in average fuel economy from cars sold in September,” Toprak continued.

According to TrueCar, the TrueMPG for vehicles sold by U.S. manufacturers averaged 20.2 mpg in September, up from 20.0 mpg in September of last year. The site also found European automakers increased their average fuel economy for vehicles sold from 21.1 mpg to 21.9 mpg, and Japanese OEMs increased their average fuel economy from last year at 23.2 mpg to 23.5 mpg.

Despite what Toprak pointed out, TrueCar noticed South Korean manufacturers decreased their average fuel economy for vehicles from 26.7 mpg to 25.7 mpg.

TrueMPG is meant to be an easy-to-understand and objective way to comprehend monthly fuel economy averages by brand, manufacturer, origin and vehicle segments using Environmental Protection Agency ratings based on estimated and/or actual monthly automotive sales-weighted data, according to the company.

“Calculations start at the trim level, taking into account EPA fuel economy data including engine size and drivetrain that affect a vehicle’s mpg ratings,” analysts explained. “The sales share from each trim level is then calculated to create an average for each model.

“Brand level data is calculated by the sales share of each model, and the manufacturer data is then based on the share of each brand, providing an accurate and completely data driven picture of actual measured MPGs in the market place,” they continued.

“TrueCar utilizes EPA’s average fuel economy rating using 45 percent highway and 55 percent city driving behavior,” the site added.

TrueCar Partners with More AAA Clubs for Buying Platform

In other company news, TrueCar announced that it will power the online vehicle buying programs for AAA Oklahoma/South Dakota and AAA Hoosier — pushing more buyers to the more than 5,000 dealers TrueCar has in its certified dealer network.

Officials highlighted AAA Oklahoma/South Dakota and AAA Hoosier clubs are the 21st and 22nd AAA organizations to provide an online car buying service to its members that is powered by TrueCar. They noted each represents a membership of more than 400,000 drivers and their families in their respective territories.

“TrueCar, like AAA, is all about providing convenience and value to the consumer,” stated Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma/South Dakota.

“Our membership expects the best service and value for their dollar — which is why we believe our partnership with TrueCar and their free, convenient way to save money on a new car purchase, is such a natural fit,” Mai continued.

To date, TrueCar has facilitated the sale of more than 350,000 vehicles — saving consumers more than $1 billion off of MSRP.

“AAA represents the gold standard in terms of auto-related services,” declared Bernie Brenner, TrueCar’s chief strategy officer.

“TrueCar is proud to offer AAA members a revolutionary way to save time and money on their new car purchase,” Brenner went on to say. “Additionally, we believe that AAA members can expect the same high level of customer service from our network of certified dealers as they receive from AAA-approved auto repair businesses.”
