What SUVs and crossovers should dealers keep a particularly good eye on when closing up for the day? 

The National Insurance Crime Bureau released a new report Tuesday that examines thefts of SUVs and CUVs stolen between Jan. 1, 2008, and June 30, 2012, which shows 19,961 SUVs/CUVs were reported stolen during the period.

The data was further filtered to produce thefts for 2009, 2010 and 2011 model year vehicles only.

The top five makes and models stolen during the period were:  Ford Escape (1,014), Chevrolet Tahoe (856), Toyota RAV4 (801), Ford Edge (739) and the Dodge Journey (721).

“In terms of class, entry-level CUVs reported the most thefts with 6,357.  Mid-range CUVs came in second with 3,560, followed by large SUVs with  2,454,” officials added.

Highlighting the numbers by state, California had the most SUV/CUV thefts with 3,003, followed by Texas with 1,826 and Florida with 1,784.

“When examined by core-based statistical area New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, N.Y.-N.J-Pa. posted the most thefts with 2,438.  That was followed by the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, Calif. CBSA with 1,229 thefts.  The Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Mich. CBSA was third with 1,215 thefts,” NICB officials reported.

Interestingly, officials noted that one model, in particular, is not as hot as it had been made out to be in the past. NCIB said Cadillac Escalade thefts have been greatly exaggerated.

“Some news reports in recent years have erroneously named the Cadillac Escalade as the 'most stolen' vehicle.  In fact, based on data going back to 2005, the Cadillac Escalade never attained a ranking higher than No. 11 of the top 25 makes and models stolen each year,” officials explained.
