WOBURN, Mass. -

The Ford F-150 is the most popular used car in Atlanta.

It’s also the most popular in Austin, Texas. The same goes for Charlotte, N.C., Denver and Houston.

In fact, a new study from car search engine iSeeCars.com shows the F-150 to be the most popular used car in almost half of the most populous metro areas. Also, it is the most popular used car in 32 out of 50 states.

iSeeCars notes that for more than 40 years, the Ford F-150 has been America’s best-selling new vehicle.

“And it maintains its popularity in the used-car marketplace as well,” iSeeCars chief executive officer Phong Ly said in a news release.

A new analysis by iSeeCars.com titled, “Most Popular Cars in America,” looks at more than 19 million vehicle sales for 2019 to determine the most popular used and new cars across the United States by metro area and state.

For the study, iSeeCars.com analyzed more than 8.9 million used-car sales from model years 2014 to 2018 and more than 10.9 million new-car sales in 2019.

The study showed a second pickup, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, as the most popular used vehicle in two metro areas. That makes the segment the most popular among half of the most populous metro areas.

The Silverado 1500 is the most popular used vehicle in five states and the Toyota Tacoma in one.

“This shows that pickup trucks are the most popular used vehicle across the country,” Ly said. 

Ly added, “While pickup trucks are commonly known as being work vehicles, they have evolved to be popular family haulers as well thanks to their abundant cargo room and safety features.” 

Coming in second as the most popular vehicle type among American used-car buyers: the sedan. It was the most popular vehicle in 17 metro areas, with the midsize Nissan Altima showing up as the most popular used car in seven metro areas.

The Honda Civic came in next with six metro areas, then the Honda Accord in two and the Toyota Camry in one.

Despite that good news for sedans, Ly noted the declining overall popularity of the sector.

However, he said, “popular sedans remain in high demand in areas of the country with more temperate climates that don’t require all-wheel drive.”

In seven metro areas, SUVs account for the most popular used vehicle. Leading the way there is the Chevrolet Equinox, which is the most popular SUV in four metro areas. The Nissan Rogue is most popular in two and the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape both show up as most popular in one apiece.

Because the Chevrolet Equinox is among the most affordable vehicles in its class and shows strong reliability and fuel economy, that makes the vehicle attractive to used-car buyers, Ly said.

“These SUVs are all in the compact category, which shows that more used car buyers favor smaller SUVs that aren’t expensive as their larger counterparts,” Ly said.

Not surprisingly, the F-150 stood out in the iSeeCars survey in the area of new vehicles, as well. The vehicle is the most popular new car in 20 metro areas, and the pickup truck segment is the most popular new type of vehicle in a majority of the top metro areas.

The Silverado 1500 comes in as the most popular new car in eight metro areas, and the Ram Pickup 1500 earned the title in one, Cleveland-Akron (Canton), Ohio.

Similar to the most popular used vehicles, the most popular new SUVs are all in the compact category. In nine metro areas, the Honda CR-V is the most popular new car, with the Chevrolet Equinox and the Toyota RAV4 each in two.

“Compact SUVs are a popular vehicle segment that appeal to those buying SUVs for the first time as well as those who want a family vehicle and don’t require a large SUV,” Ly said.

Sedans are the most popular new car in seven metro areas, and the lone sport wagon, the Subaru Outback in one.
