The number of vehicles with unrepaired recalls has grown dramatically in the past two years, according to the latest research by CARFAX — and a fourth of them have multiple recalls that haven’t been fixed.

CARFAX said its data shows 58.1 million vehicles — about one in five cars on the road have an open recall, up 16% over two years. More than 14 million have two or more unresolved recalls, which the company said significantly raises the risk of critical safety component failures.

“Drivers should be aware of the recalls on their vehicles, especially those with two or more,” CARFAX Car Care general manager Paul Nadjarian said. “Addressing them can save lives and protect your wallet in the long run.

“Fortunately, with free monitoring services such as CARFAX Car Care, consumers can leverage the tools they need to easily keep track of and fix these issues. That helps boost vehicle reliability and driver confidence down the road.”

Not surprisingly, the four most populous states lead the nation in unrepaired recalls, according to CARFAX estimates. Texas is at the top of the list with 1.6 million, followed by California (1.5 million), Florida (901,000) and New York (528,000). Georgia (509,000), Ohio (508,000), Pennsylvania (508,000), North Carolina (477,000), Illinois (406,000) and Arizona (389,000) fill out the top 10.

CARFAX said consumers can use its free service at carfax.com/recall to check whether their vehicle has an unresolved recall.
