A bet between a couple of Hall of Famers will put Shaquille O’Neal on the track at Daytona International Speedway.
Well, his image, at least.
When the former NBA star and current basketball commentator ended his playful war of words with seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson last week by winning a free throw-shooting contest, he earned the right to design the paint scheme of Johnson’s No. 84 Toyota Camry for this week’s Daytona 500.
The design features O’Neal’s “Dunkman” logo slamming home a basketball on the car’s hood.
“Jimmie and I had a ton of fun putting this together,” O’Neal said in a news release from Johnson’s primary sponsor, Carvana. “The car looks amazing and I can’t wait to see him tear up the track next Sunday. Lucky for him, he’s got a better shot at victory lane than at the free-throw line.”
The bet grew out of social media comments by O’Neal after the 49-year-old Johnson, who retired as a full-time driver in 2020, announced his plan to get behind the wheel for two NASCAR races in 2025 — Daytona and the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte. N.C. If he qualifies, this will be Johnson’s 22nd start in the Daytona 500.
O’Neal fired the first shot, joking that 22 years is enough. Johnson retaliated, saying, “I’ve still got the drive” and asking O’Neal about his jump shot, and eventually challenging him to a free throw competition — always a weak spot for the big man, who shot just 52% from the line in his career. O’Neal first asked to drive a lap in Johnson’s car if he won, but settled for designing its look when Johnson said, “Only place you’re driving my car is to dinner.”
O’Neal won the first-to-make-five contest, 5-4.
“I figured our little feud would stay online, but next thing I know, Shaq’s challenging me to a free throw contest and calling the shots on my paint scheme,” Johnson said. “I have to admit — he’s got style. It’s bold, it’s iconic and I can’t wait to take it to the track.”
The Shaq-designed car will debut in Wednesday’s Daytona qualifying. Because of his part-time status, Johnson has to earn one of the four available spots in the 40-car field either through qualifying or his 150-mile Duel qualifying race Thursday night. The Daytona 500 is Sunday.
“Jimmie and Shaq are two of the most legendary athletes in their sports, and when they started going back and forth we knew something fun had to come out of it,” Carvana co-founder and chief brand officer Ryan Keeton said. “By blending the worlds of basketball and NASCAR, we’re bringing together two high-energy arenas and two iconic athletes to create something truly unforgettable for fans of both sports.”
