Chevrolet to Give Aveo a New Name for North American Market
DETROIT -
The Chevrolet Aveo will soon have a new name in North America.
Throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the small car will be known as the Sonic. Elsewhere across the world, the Aveo name will remain.
The company said it will begin building the Sonic in 2011.
“The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name,” explained vice president of Chevrolet U.S. marketing Chris Perry.
“The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about,” Perry added.
It will be build at General Motors’ Orion Assembly Center in Michigan. The automaker pumped $545 million into enhancing and “retooling” that facility. It is expected that about 1,000 jobs will be brought back to Detroit because of this, GM suggested.
