TORRANCE, Calif. -
Close to 2 million vehicles are being recalled by Toyota in three separate announcements that came out today. Two of the recalls are outside of North America, while one involves the U.S.
The two non-U.S. recalls from Toyota Motor Corp. cover a combined total of more than 1.7 million vehicles. One of the recalls is for a fuel delivery pipe issue and the other is for a high-pressure fuel pump check value issue. Again, these particular recalls do not impact North America.
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Sales USA revealed a separate recall to examine the fuel pressure sensor installation on about 245,000 Lexus models.
The U.S. safety recall consists of Lexus GS 300/350 units from 2006 and 2007, Lexus IS 250 units from 2006 through early 2009 and Lexus IS from 2006 through early 2008.
“Due to insufficient tightening of the fuel pressure sensor connected to certain engine fuel delivery pipes (those with Nickel Phosphorus plating), there is a possibility that the pressure sensor could loosen over time,” officials explained in a statement.
“If loosening occurs, fuel could leak past a gasket used in the connection between the sensor and the delivery pipe and through the threaded portion of the sensor,” they added.
If upon inspection, Lexus dealers don’t discover any fuel leakage, they can simply use the correct torque to tighten the fuel pressure sensor.
However, should they come across a fuel leak, dealers will need to swap out the gasket that is between the delivery pipe and the sensor. Dealers will also need to apply the appropriate amount of torque to tighten the sensor.
Owners can have these processes done for free.
When it receives the necessary parts for the fix, the automaker will start letting owners know of the safety recall via first-class mail. These details will also be added to Lexus’ website.
The automaker indicated that consumers can contact (800) 255-3987 or visit www.lexus.com/recall for details, as well.
More on Worldwide Recall
Delving more into the specifics of the international recall, Brian Lyons, of Toyota Motor Sales USA, explained these details to Auto Remarketing.
The countries involved are Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany and New Zealand, he said. He said the first recall impacts 1.34 million units and is to replace just the fuel pipe. It includes the following models: Caldina, Vista, RAV4, Gaia, Nadia, Opa, Noah/Boxy, Premio/Boxy, Wish, Isis and Avensis.
The other recall affects 393,000 units and calls for the replacement of both the fuel pipe and the high-pressure check valve gasket. The following models are affected: Caldina, Vista, RAV4, Gaia, Nadia, Opa, Noah/Boxy, Premio/Boxy, Wish and the Isis.
