GRAPEVINE, Texas -

The general manager at Classic Chevrolet outside of Dallas — the No. 1 volume Chevy dealership in the U.S. for the five consecutive years — doesn’t think he has some secret formula.

Hagen Durant declared how proud he is of what the store team has achieved during the past half-decade because of one primary strategy — treating the customer right.

“When people are going into a transaction, that could be an emotional time in their life,” Durant observed from his store in Grapevine, Texas, a test-drive length from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

“Committing to a monthly payment, that’s not an easy thing to do,” he conceded.

Recently featured on the Faces of GM Blog, Durant explained there is another element into what he calls treating customers right. It’s a belief in not pushing people to close a deal.

“Be friendly about it. You might get to see that person again some other time when they’re back in the market,” Durant advised.

Durant admits that Classic Chevrolet isn’t the five-time volume champ simply because it has friendly salespeople. He understands sitting right in the middle of two large markets such as Dallas and Fort Worth is certainly a big asset.

Furthermore, Durant noted that having more than 2,000 vehicles in inventory on a 40-acre lot also helps convince customers that this is a good place to shop for a new vehicle.

Durant pointed out Classic Chevrolet sells four trucks for every car. But, he admits the car lineup has “really stepped up its game in the past few years.”

The store leader offered some quick takes on some of the latest GM cars:

—The Cruze: “The Ecotech with a turbocharger on the Cruze is pretty nice.”

—The Camaro convertible: “It’s really nice. I feel honored to have it in my showroom.”

—The Volt: “It’s amazing to be in a car that’s not combusting whenever you’re driving. It’s just a whole different experience.”

The automaker used some sports reference to put into perspective Classic Chevrolet’s run of volume success.

GM mentioned the New York Yankees won the World Series each year from 1949 to 1953, and the Montreal Canadiens took the Stanley Cup annually from 1956 through 1960. Also, the automaker said driver Jimmie Johnson has won the past five NASCAR championships, and the Boston Celtics claimed seven NBA titles in a row.

Durant emphasized that he doesn’t talk a lot about being No. 1. Instead, the general manager stresses the assurance that his customers have a good experience.

So what does Durant hope every customer says when leaving Classic Chevrolet?

“See you next time,” he responded.

GM wrapped up this blog feature by highlighting, “With people, products and pride, you can be sure Classic Chevrolet is aiming for a sixth straight sales championship.”
