While the lack of public charging facilities is one of the most cited reasons by consumers for not considering an electric vehicle, most EV owners say they don’t need or use them.
Carvana’s EV Trends Report, which includes a survey of more than 400 Carvana customers who purchased a battery electric vehicle in 2024, found 76% of the respondents said they rarely or never use public chargers.
That’s because 80% of the EV owners surveyed reported they primarily choose to charge at home, while just 13% rely on public charging infrastructure as their main charging source.
The survey also found 86% of EV owners drive less than 50 miles on a typical day, though 52% said they use their EV when they take long road trips.
Saving money on fuel was the top reason cited for buying an EV, but surprisingly, vehicle style and performance came in at No. 2, ahead of environmental impact.
The report said that appeal is being driven by the wider selection of electric models now available, noting that as more electric SUVs appeared in the market, SUVs quickly became the best-selling EV body style on Carvana’s platform.
Carvana said EVs accounted for 5.7% of its used-car retail sales in 2024, well above the 1.3% share of the overall used market shown in Kelley Blue Book and MarketCheck data. According to the survey, 88% of EV owners indicated they are more likely to consider an EV for their next vehicle purchase.
“Like all new technologies, EVs will go through various phases of adoption,” Carvana founder and CEO Ernie Garcia said, “but based on the growth Carvana has seen as selection and access improve, we believe EVs are here to stay.
“As adoption continues, we are making investments in our process for EVs so EV buyers get the same high-quality experience as every other Carvana customer.”
