EXCLUSIVE: Winter Weather Sparks High Demand for SUVs, Trucks
Not only are Americans getting the snow tire chains out, but they may also be heading to the lots for a more reliable winter-weather vehicle.
With winter temperatures setting in across the country, the latest installment of vehicle scarcity data that is provided monthly to Auto Remarketing by AutoTrader.com, shows “trucks and SUVs are in high demand.”
This trend manifested itself in a variety of ways last month, as trucks and SUVs were particularly scarce in colder areas including Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston.
There were also some large-vehicle newcomers to the lists in October.
On the national level, the CPO Mazda Tribute appeared at No. 5, and it wasn’t on the list in September, so it made a big leap, AutoTrader.com pointed out.
The used Land Rover Range Rover also made it onto the national list at No. 8, amidst a group of luxury and sport models.
Covering the regional themes, Toyota has a variety of SUVs show up on the designated market areas lists.
The CPO Toyota Sequoia was scarce in four DMAs in October: Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, and Boston, according to Auto Trader.com data.
The CPO Toyota Sequoia came in at:
- No. 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (down one spot month-over-month)
- No. 6 in Philadelphia (down two spots month-over-month)
- No. 10 in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose (not on the list in that DMA in September)
- No. 8 in Boston (also not on the list in that DMA in September)
The used Toyota FJ Cruiser, a discontinued model, was scarce in four DMAs (Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose), and the CPO Toyota FJ Cruiser was scarce in Boston.
The Used Toyota FJ Cruiser came in at:
- No. 8 in New York (it was not on the list in that DMA in September)
- No. 6 in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose (it was also not on the list in that DMA in September)
- No. 10 in Chicago (down two spots month-over-month)
The CPO Toyota FJ Cruiser came in at:
- No. 6 in Boston (it was not on the list in that DMA in September)
Chevrolet trucks were another slice of the vehicle market that proved hard to find last month.
For example, the CPO Chevrolet Colorado was scarce in Atlanta, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and the used Chevrolet Colorado was scarce in Philadelphia.
The CPO Chevrolet Colorado came in at:
- No. 9 in Atlanta (it was not on the list in that DMA in September)
- No. 8 in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose (it was not on the list in that DMA in September)
- No. 2 in Washington, D.C. (up two spots month-over-month)
- No. 5 in Philadelphia (it was not on the list in that DMA in September)
AutoTrader.com also noted that trucks proved particularly scarce in Philadelphia, with the CPO Chevrolet Colorado (No. 5), the Used Colorado (No. 9) and the CPO Ford Ranger (No. 9.) all making it onto the lists in October.
It is interesting to note that neither the CPO Chevrolet Colorado or the CPO Ford Ranger were on the scarcity lists in September.
Lastly, the data from October showed that SUVs are proving particularly hard to find for dealers in Boston and Chicago, as well as one sunny outlier: Los Angeles.
Though the City of Angels is certainly not known for its winter weather, in Los Angeles, the CPO Jeep Commander came in at No. 4, and the CPO Volkswagen Touareg came in at No. 5.
Neither was on the lists in that DMA in September.
And the used Honda Element came in at No. 2, up seven spots from the month prior.
Moving farther north, in Boston, the CPO Jeep Commander came in at No. 4; the CPO Toyota FJ Cruiser came in at No. 6; and the CPO Toyota Sequoia came in at No. 8.
None of these models were on the lists in Boston during September.
And in Chicago, CPO SUVs were in high demand.
The CPO Chevrolet Trailblazer came in at No. 1, up nine spots from the month prior; the CPO Mazda Tribute came in at No. 3 (not on the list in September); and the CPO Jeep Grand Cherokee came in at No. 6 in Chicago (also not on the list in September).
