GREENSBURG, Pa. -

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a Pennsylvania dealership group has gone pink, splashing vast pink ribbons across all eight of their buildings.

Smail Auto Group says the pink ribbons are making more than a visual statement: The auto group is also donating $100 for every new and used vehicle sold at Smail dealerships throughout the month of October.

The Smail group represents nine new-car franchises, including Acura, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda, Cadillac and GMC, all located in Greensburg.

Smail launched its first Smail Auto Group Cares campaign last October, covering its buildings with more than 5,000 square feet of pink vinyl and raising more than $50,000 for local breast cancer awareness, prevention and research organizations, the company reported.

This year, the campaign has expanded to surrounding businesses to become Route 30 Thinks Pink, in which numerous businesses along Route 30 in Greensburg are showing raising awareness by turning their establishments pink for the month.

“We were amazed by the attention and support we got last year when we started this campaign, and this year we are excited that so many other businesses along Route 30 have joined in to support breast cancer awareness,” said Lindsey Smail. “It’s something that my family is passionate about and we are honored to partner with such great breast cancer research and support organizations.”

Breast cancer has touched the Smail family personally, with two family members having battled the disease.

“It is so important for us to help relay the message that early detection is key,” said Kathy Smail Johnson. “If our pink ribbon-splashed buildings remind even one woman to get a mammogram or perform a self-exam, we have achieved our goal.”

Smail Auto Group employees are also raising money for the cause, taking part in a local walk to raise awareness and in the company’s “Wear Pink” days.

Funds raised via the company and its customers will be distributed to Magee Women’s Research Institute & Foundation; the development of a Breast Care Center at Excela Square at Norwin; and Westmoreland Walks Inc.’s Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer, the group reported.
