Patchwork of prices: CARFAX adds regional data to used-car index

Like an accent or dialect, the used-car market can vary depending on where you (or y’all or yinz) are in the U.S.
And CARFAX is accounting for this patchwork of market dialects, so to speak, by adding in regional breakdowns to its monthly index of retail used-car prices.
The CARFAX Used Car Index now includes eight regions:
- Mid-Atlantic: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware
- Midwest: Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri
- Northeast: New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts
- Plains: Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana
- South: Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas
- Southeast: Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee
- Southwest: Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas
- West: Washington, California, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii, Alaska.
“This is important because every region has a different mix of what’s popular, what’s available and what’s in short supply. The regional UCI will call out the biggest movers in each region while still tracking and commenting on the national pricing shifts,” CARFAX editor in chief Patrick Olsen wrote in the latest index report.
“For example, in February, the average price of used pickup trucks was down $350 nationally, but up about $400 in the West region.”
Looking first at CARFAX’s national data by segment, SUV prices were up 1.6% month-over-month in March and down 0.1% year-over-year, while cars were up 0.6% from February and down 3.4% year-over-year.
Pickups jumped 0.8% month-over-month and fell 5.1% year-over-year, while luxury SUVs were up 1.4% versus February and 0.9% versus March 2024, according to the CARFAX data.
Luxury cars fell 0.2% month-over-month and were up 1.2% year-over-year.
Hybrids and electric vehicle prices climbed 0.9% from February and 0.1% from March 2024, while van prices were up 3.7% month-over-month and down 2.4% year-over-year, the data shows.
Looking at price movements in the eight regions, some of the trends that stood out:
- Vans and minivans were up 3.8% month-over-month in the Mid-Atlantic: “This seems to be part of a larger national trend for large family haulers,” Olsen wrote.
- In the Plains, luxury SUVs had the sharpest increase (3.2% from February). But perhaps a surprise from the land “where the buffalo roam,” as Olsen points out: “Hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs) also saw a bigger-than-usual bump of 2.4%, with the average topping $30,000 here.
- In the Southeast, where this publication and CARFAX have headquarters: “Vans and minivans saw the biggest increase in average used prices for this region on Carfax.com in March, rising 3.5% and nearly hitting $22,000,” Olsen said. “The average price for used pickup trucks increased a whopping $800 over last month, but the average price is about $1,500 lower than a year ago. Luxury SUV prices were also up here — 2.3% higher.”
