Survey: EV owners are eager to come back for more
Owners of electric vehicles are ready to come back for more.
The 2024 EV Driver Survey, conducted early this year by nonprofit organizations Plug In America and EPRI, found 89% of EV owners said they are likely or very likely to purchase an EV as their next vehicle, a result Plug In America said has been consistent since the survey was first done in 2021.
And among Tesla drivers and EV drivers age 65 and older, more than 90% of the respondents said their next vehicle would likely be an EV.
The survey of more than 4,200 consumers, including more than 3,300 EV drivers, showed 77% of those who don’t already have an EV and are considering buying or leasing a car in the next 12 months are considering a battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.
In a news release, Plug In America said the survey is intended to provide “a full picture of the current EV experience” in the U.S., including motivations for choosing an EV, the purchasing journey, the biggest concerns of EV drivers and non-EV drivers, and the current EV driver profile.
Plug In America is a national nonprofit whose mission is “accelerating the shift” to EVs. EPRI is an independent nonprofit energy research and development organization.
The survey found drivers’ level of concern about nearly every factor involved in owning an EV, including battery range, public charging availability and price, decreased after experience driving an electric vehicle.
“It’s great to have data show what we’ve heard from EV owners for years,” Plug In America executive director Joel Levin said. “What seem like scary issues for some people considering an EV become non-issues after going electric.”
The only concerns that increased were public charging reliability and the impact of weather.
Rivian was the big winner in customer satisfaction among the EVs rated by consumers in the survey. Rivian’s R1T and R1S took the top two spots overall, ahead of Tesla’s Model S. Between them, the two Rivian models took the top spot in seven of the 11 categories rated by respondents.
