CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -

CarGurus has a new chief executive officer

Founder Langley Steinert is transitioning out of the role and will become the executive chairman. Named to the CEO post is Jason Trevisan, who was chief financial officer of CarGurus and its president of international. He joined the company as its CFO in 2015.

Steinert, who founded the company in 2006, said in a letter to CarGurus’ shareholders that he wants to put more of his focus on the company’s long-term product strategy, saying, “Now, and with the board’s full support, it is time for me to take the next step and transition out of the CEO position and into the role of executive chairman.”

Steinert will continue to be the chairman of the board of directors at CarGurus. Trevisan will join its board.

Under Steinert’s leadership, CarGurus’ growth moves have included going public, expanding to digital marketing along with data and financing products and purchasing a majority interest in CarOffer — a move that gave the company a foothold in wholesale.

“I am tremendously excited about the future for CarGurus, and I am honored to lead this talented team as we continue to innovate in our space and create products that bring value to our consumers and dealers,” Trevisan said in a news release. “We are at an exciting point as a company, with our leadership in our core listings business well-established and a long runway for growth and expansion into new areas ahead.”

Scot Fredo, who had been senior vice president of financial planning and analysis, takes on the role of CFO.

Sam Zales remains president and chief operating officer. He will also take the international operations again and add responsibilities for the digital wholesale operations. That includes overseeing CarOffer.

“I could not be more excited to pass the torch to Jason as CarGurus embarks on our next phase of expansion and growth,” Steinert said. “Jason’s visionary leadership over the past five years, along with his deep commitment to our people and our customers, has been integral to our growth and has helped to position CarGurus for future success. Jason brings both strategic vision and strong operational expertise to the CEO role, and I have the utmost confidence in him and our entire executive leadership team going forward.”

Added Trevisan, “I am also thrilled to congratulate Scot Fredo on his appointment to the position of CFO. Scot has not only been a brilliant steward of our financial assets and operations over the years, but also a critical partner in strategy and planning as we’ve scaled the organization and acquired new companies. I look forward to working with Scot and the entire executive team as we continue to drive future success.”
