CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -

With used-vehicle sales potentially showing the highest October in four years, CarGurus released some news that might bring even more consumers to dealer’s lots.

Its Used Car Price Index for this past month showed a slight dip in the average price of a used car, sitting at $19,278 — down 0.88 percent from September and 1.7 percent from August.

Despite the apparent downtrend, the company noted the average price of a used car still remains up 2.86 percent year-over-year.

Breaking it down by segment, the year-over-year price increases are most significant among hatchbacks (up 13.62 percent over last October) and coupes (up 14.89 percent over last October).

SUVs and pickups are bucking the trend, down 0.26 percent and 1.49 percent year-over-year, respectively.

Commenting on the statistics, Langly Steinart, founder and chief executive officer of CarGurus said, "Prices on most used cars are still high, however, the overall picture is certainly better than it was for consumers last spring and summer.

"With prices less erratic and demand expected to drop further as winter approaches, consumers should be in a better position to gain clarity on market values and negotiate with dealers,” he continued.

Providing a little background, used-car prices peaked this past April and then dipped slightly before climbing up again in late summer. Now, it would seem they are trending downward once again.
