WASHINGTON, D.C. — National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officials described themselves as "very concerned" about a complaint surfacing in connection with the immense steering system failure of a 2010 Kia Soul.
NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation indicated it has received one complaint that alleges the steering shaft de-coupled from the steering wheel. Officials said it resulted in a complete loss of steering capability.
Furthermore, the federal officials said steering shaft reportedly fell into a position that interfered with brake pedal application
According to the government, the vehicle connected with the complaint had approximately two months and 4,300 miles of service.
"ODI is very concerned about this failure in that it occurred without warning on a new vehicle at low mileage and resulted in a complete loss of steering as well as a compromised brake system," federal officials declared.
"A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the alleged defect in the subject vehicles," they added.
