For those who enjoy spring more than summer, the certified pre-owned vehicle market this year is kind of like the weather in the South.

It “peaked in April” and just got worse from there, according to a report Tuesday from Cox Automotive.

There were 205,924 CPO sales in June, compared to 208,423 in May and 223,999 in April, according to a Cox Automotive analysis of Motor Intelligence data. The year-over-year decrease was close to 17%, Cox said.

In May, the month-over-month decline was 7% and the year-over-year decline was more than 22%, Cox previously reported.

At the year’s midpoint, CPO sales are off nearly 17% compared to 2021 and are likely to finish even softer, the company said.

“With another slight decrease in June, CPO sales are down nearly 17% year to date, as we anticipated based on market dynamics,” said Chris Frey, senior manager of economic and industry insights at Cox Automotive, in the report.

“With six months to go, CPO sales remain on track to finish near 2.3 million in 2022, down nearly 18% from last year’s 2.7 million,” Frey said.

Looking at individual sales reports from automakers, Mercedes-Benz had 33,096 CPO sales in the second quarter. That put year-to-date sales at 66,025 units, which the company said is its second strongest first half for CPO ever.

Mazda North American Operations reported 4,121 certified sales in June, a 31% year-over-year drop.

Volvo had 2,980 CPO certified sales in June and has moved 15,519 CPO units year-to-date.
