WASHINGTON, D.C. -

More than 228,000 Volkswagen models — including the Golf, Jetta, New Beetle and Rabbit — are part of a safety recall announced Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Officials said the recall stems from a defect that could compromise the under-hood fuel supply line. The vehicles being recalled include:

—2007-2009 model year Golf.

—2007-2009 model year Jetta.

—2007-2009 model year Jetta Sportwagen.

—2006-2010 model year New Beetle.

—2007-2009 model year Rabbit.

According to federal officials, the Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen, Golf and Rabbit models equipped with 2.5-liter engines may have a small plastic tab located on the windshield washer fluid reservoir that might chafe against the under-hood fuel supply line.

They then explained the New Beetle models may have a fastening clamp connected to a hydraulic hose associated with the power steering system that also could chafe the under-hood fuel supply line if located in an improper position.

“If chafing occurs, there is the potential for a fuel leak to develop,” NHTSA insisted. “Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.”

To remedy the situation, NHTSA is asking Volkswagen to instruct its franchise dealers to conduct an inspection and either remove the plastic tab from the windshield washer fluid reservoir or adjust the position of the hydraulic hose clamp.

Officials said these measures are expected to begin on or before Jan. 31.

NHTSA offered vehicle owners the chance to contact the department directly by dialing (888) 327-4236 or visiting www.safecar.gov.
