Nissan Issues Massive Recall of Trucks, SUVs to Fix Engine Component
Nissan North America revealed the extent of a voluntary safety recall to replace an electrical relay for the engine control module. The recall is connected with certain Nissan and Infiniti truck and SUV models in the U.S and Canada.
The automaker said approximately 747,000 potentially affected vehicles are in the U.S. and approximately 23,000 are in Canada. These vehicles are model year 2004 to 2006 Nissan Armadas, Titans and Infiniti QX56s and model year 2005 to 2006 Nissan Frontiers, Pathfinders and Xterras. The units were manufactured between August 2003 and June 2006.
Globally, the OEM indicated approximately 2.14 million vehicles are included in this recall.
Nissan recently discovered that on some of the potentially affected vehicles, silicon vapor may form inside the electrical relay that supplies voltage to the engine control module. Over time, the company thinks this vapor could create oxidation on the electrical contacts in the relay that may lead to engine performance issues, including the possibility of stalling at low engine speeds.
The automaker emphasized it is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries associated with this issue.
Nissan plans to begin owner notification in early December. Officials explained owners will be asked to bring their vehicles to the dealer to have the relay for the engine control module replaced with a new relay.
The company is encouraging customers with questions to contact its consumer affairs department. For Nissan vehicles, the number is (800) 647-7261. For Infiniti vehicles, the number is (800) 662-6200.
The manufacturer also recommended that customers can contact their respective authorized Nissan or Infiniti dealer.
“At Nissan, we’re committed to the safety and satisfaction of our customers,” stated Kevin Martin, vice president of total customer satisfaction for Nissan North America.
“We regret any inconveniences that our customers may experience as we address this issue,” Martin added.
