Ex-Amazon exec a ‘natural fit’ to lead SHiFT end-of-life vehicle recycling services
The SHiFT Vehicle Retirement Initiative, a global social enterprise committed to helping consumers and companies recycle end-of-life vehicles with environmentally responsible protocols, has hired former Amazon executive Chapin Griffith as its first director of vehicle retirement services.
Griffith, who began his new position in October, spent the past three years as Amazon’s senior product manager of delivery fleet remarketing, developing Amazon’s nationwide vehicle retirement service and end-of-lifecycle strategies and helping scale that practice area into a $100 million business enabling the retirement of more than 20,000 end-of-life vehicles annually.
In a news release, SHiFT said Griffith’s background in fleet management strategies gives him a “unique perspective … on how end-of-life vehicles should be properly tracked and recycle,” adding he is “a natural fit” for the organization.
In his new role, Griffith said, he will “begin digging into the myriad ways the program can help reduce the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions. SHiFT is at the forefront of a major challenge facing economies of every size, which is how to effectively manage aging fleets of vehicles and pair them with a highly efficient and environmentally conscious method of retirement and recycling.”
Griffith will work closely with fleet owners, automotive recyclers and insurance companies to ensure seamless processing of end-of-life vehicles, seeking to streamline processes for SHiFT customers and reduce the time it takes to put retired vehicles into the hands of its partner recycling facilities.
He will also lead efforts to broaden awareness among consumers, reminding them they can donate older cars or trucks to SHiFT to ensure they are properly decommissioned, rather than ending up back on the roads or sent to third-world economies — all-too-common scenarios for donation vehicles.
SHiFT was founded to address the ongoing environmental concerns associated with older, end-of-life vehicles and their impact on greenhouse gas emissions. It has partnered with automotive recycling facilities across the U.S. to process and dismantle vehicles in accordance with strict environmental safeguards while also ensuring reusable components are made available for sale so consumers can access affordable and sustainable used parts.
