RM’s Monterey Sale Touts Hollywood Cars Linked to McQueen
For an auction that offered fans James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5 used in the Goldfinger and Thunderball movies, even more cars off the silver screen are set to hit the lanes at RM Auctions this week.
Four vehicles linked to Steve McQueen, also known as the “King of Cool”, will be available to shoppers attending the Monteray Calif., sale scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
From Ford, shoppers willing to drop millions will have a chance to score the 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf/ Mirage Lightweight Racing Car, which was leased by McQueen’s film company, Solar Productions, in 1970, for the the Hollywood film Le Mans.
Moreover, featured in the same movie and set for RM’s auction spotlight is a 1956 Fiat Series 306/2 Grand Prix Transporter.
“Commissioned by the Maserati Grand Prix team, it was subsequently used by both Lance Reventlow’s and Carroll Shelby’s race teams before earning a supporting role in Le Mans,” officials further explained.
McQueen fans will also be bidding on a 1961 Cooper T-56 Mark II Formula Junior Racing Car, owned and successfully raced by McQueen in California in 1962, and an unrestored, “extremely well-documented” 1953 Hudson Hornet Sedan, which was in McQueen’s possession at the time of his passing in 1980, auction officials noted.
But that’s not all the “star” attractions set for the sale.
A 1956 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta 14-Louver ‘Tour de France’ — the first 14-louver Tour de France of just nine examples built — that co-starred in the 1966 film The Love Bug after being bought by Walt Disney Studios, will be available as well.
Moreover, a 1965 Shelby 427 Competition Cobra ,which was rented by MGM British Studios in early-1966 and used as a camera car and appeared in many scenes of the hit Formula One film Grand Prix, will also be up for sale.
Highlighting the sale in more detail, officials noted that RM’s Monterey sale is held during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance motoring week.
“In total, the two-day sale will lift the gavel on 120 blue-chip automobiles before a global audience,” the auction noted.
