In January, these used vehicles flew off the lots
The average used vehicle takes 38.9 days to sell.
But the top 20 fastest-selling vehicles only take an average of 29.6 days, more than 30% faster, according to iSeeCars.com.
Similar to new cars, SUVs dominate the list of the top 20 fastest-selling used vehicles, according to a new study from the car search engine company. In addition to SUVs, luxury vehicles also stand out in the list.
Overall, the fastest-selling used vehicle is the Hyundai Palisade, according to iSeeCars.
The Palisade midsize SUV shares a platform with the seventh-ranked Kia Telluride, and the two vehicles are very similar.
“Both of these popular vehicles debuted for the 2020 model year, during pandemic-constrained production, so there aren’t many in the used-car marketplace,” iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer said in a news release.
iSeeCars also identified the top 20 fastest-selling new cars, and like used cars, SUVs make up most of the list. That said, the Chevrolet Corvette came in as the fastest-selling new vehicle in January.
Going back to the pre-owned side, eight luxury SUVs make the list of fastest-selling used vehicles.
Some of those include the Land Rover Range Rover Velar at No. 14, the BMW X6 at No. 15, the 18th-ranked Lexus RX 350, and the Tesla Model X at No. 20.
“Luxury SUVs are a popular vehicle segment as people who aren’t financially impacted by the pandemic are making big-ticket purchases with the money they’re saving from reduced travel and entertainment,” Brauer said.
Only one electric luxury SUV makes the list: The Tesla Model X, which has seen strong demand since its 2015 release.
“And its over-the-air updates keep it up-to-date, making used versions attractive buys,” Brauer said.
Three sports cars on the list include the Corvette at No. 3, the Porsche 911 at No. 10, and the 11th-ranked Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Brauer said that with an average used-car price of $21,408, the MX-5 Miata is one of the most affordable sports cars in the segment. He said the Corvette and the 911 are more expensive, showing average prices of $67,308 and $126,892 respectively.
“These are aspirational cars for many, and consumers are purchasing these vehicles as a source of joy in the midst of the pandemic, further adding to the demand of these already popular used vehicles,” Brauer said.
Two German luxury cars make the list, and they are convertibles.
Those are the midsize Mercedes-Benz E-Class at No. 6 and the compact BMW 4 Series at No. 16. More consumers are opting for luxury vehicles such as luxury SUVs and sports cars, Brauer said.
“And convertibles are yet another example of this trend,” he said.
Two Jeeps make the list, including the Jeep Compass at No. 13 and the Jeep Wrangler at No. 17.
“The Compass is the cheapest car in the Jeep lineup, which appeals to buyers who want to own a Jeep for the first time, while the iconic Wrangler continues to be an in-demand vehicle,” Brauer said.
He said buyers who want a rugged SUV see appeal in the eighth-ranked truck-based Toyota 4Runner.
iSeeCars also conducted an analysis of the fastest-selling new and used vehicles that are the nation’s most popular. In the used-vehicle category, the Toyota 4Runner takes an average of 28.7 days to sell, with an average price of $35,078.
“Car buyers who are interested in making a new or used car purchase might have difficulty finding the most in-demand vehicles, and may end up paying a premium for them in the used-car marketplace,” Brauer said.
He also said, “Many of these fastest-selling vehicles are popular cars that are hard to find for reasons such as the effect of the pandemic on supply chains, limited production, or because they are new models that aren’t yet abundant in the used-car marketplace.”
