WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -

In a post to its AutoMotion blog on Tuesday, J.D. Power and Associates ranked the top 10 reasons consumers give for buying a specific model.

To determine this list, the firm took its 2010–2012 Initial Quality Studies and boiled it down to the 10 factors new-car owners pointed to most often in explaining their purchases.  Which reasons were the most influential?

According to J.D. Power, they were reliability and durability.

(Appropriately enough, the firm released its 2013 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study just last month, which also included some good signs for the certified pre-owned market.)

After reliability/durability, interior comfort was the second-most-cited reason, followed by exterior styling. The complete top 10 is as follows:

1. Reliability/Durability
2. Interior Comfort
3. Exterior Styling
4a. Gas Mileage
4b. Quality of Workmanship
6. Dealer was Convenient/Liked Dealer in Area
7. Performance
8a. Advanced Technology
8b. Like the Image Vehicle Portrays
10. Safety
