ATLANTA -

As summer traveling season edges closer, consumer interest may turn to larger, family oriented vehicles or SUVs.

The trend may already be evident, as the latest installment of vehicle scarcity data that is provided monthly to Auto Remarketing by AutoTrader.com shows SUVs “popping up (as scarce) in some of the DMAs, with Jeep and Volkswagen leading on that front,” the site shared.

Both certified pre-owned and late model used SUVs proved hard to find last month, perhaps illustrating ramped up demand for these units.

On a national level, the Toyota Land Cruiser (at No. 4) was the only non-luxury CPO SUV on the national CPO scarcity list.

In addition to landing on the national scarcity list, the CPO Toyota Land Cruiser also came in at No. 5 in New York, the site shared.

And for certain designated market areas, CPO SUVs are proving to be particularly elusive.

For example, CPO SUVs (non-luxury) were most scarce in Philadelphia. That DMA had three SUVs on the list: the Volkswagen Touareg at No. 7, the Toyota FJ Cruiser at No. 8 and the GMC Yukon XL at No. 9, AutoTrader shared.

And the CPO Volkswagen Touareg appeared in several other DMA scarcity lists, as well: It came in at No. 2 in Atlanta, at No. 10 in Los Angeles and at No. 7 in Philadelphia.

The Jeep brand also have a few vehicles land on the DMA-level scarcity lists:

  • The CPO Jeep Wrangler landed at No. 1 on two of the DMA scarcity lists: Houston and San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose. It also came in at No. 9 in Dallas/Ft. Worth.
  • The CPO Jeep Grand Cherokee landed at No. 6 in Houston
  • The CPO Jeep Patriot landed at No. 6 in San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose.

According to AutoTrader data, several other DMAs had at least one non-luxury SUV on their list, as well: the CPO Ford Explorer Sport Trac came in at No. 10 in New York; the CPO Toyota FJ Cruiser came in at No. 8 in Philadelphia;  the CPO GMC Yukon XL came in at No. 9 in Philadelphia;  the CPO Toyota Sequoia came in at No. 9 in Atlanta ; and the CPO Chevrolet TrailBlazer came in at No. 7 in Chicago.

Earlier this spring, the same scarcity data had showed luxury vehicles were proving very hard to find for dealers.

This trend is still prevalent, AutoTrader officials said, as the Porsche Cayman remained the No. 1 most scare CPO vehicle nationally.

“The CPO Cayman grabbed this spot in March and held on in April,” officials concluded.
