SANTA MONICA, Calif. -
The match-up between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV on Sunday is more than just pairing of a group of fans known as “cheeseheads” with a fan base that waves the “Terrible Towel.”
The cities these teams represent contrast in several ways, and  their “Small Town USA” versus “Big City” differences can be seen in their respective residents’ car-buying choices, according to TrueCar.com.
In Green Bay, Wis. — where the metropolitan statistical area had an estimated population of 304,783 people as of July 1, 2009, according to the U.S. Census Bureau — domestic brands are more popular (as far as highest-selling brands).

Its most popular brands are Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota and Honda. Five of the top 10 brands in terms of percentage of buyers are domestic.

Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh — whose metropolitan statistical area population was estimated at 2.35 million people as of July 1, 2009, the Census Bureau indicated — imports tend to dominate the pack. Its most popular brands are Chevrolet, Ford, Honda Toyota and Hyundai. Domestics represent just four of the 10 most popular brands.
“Green Bay and Pittsburgh really represent different sides of the coin,” explained Jesse Toprak, TrueCar’s vice president of trends and insights.
“According to data collected on recent new car purchasers, a majority of Green Bay is interested in outdoor activities while Pittsburgh is just the opposite, enjoying indoor, tech-heavy activities,” he continued. “This is reflected in the cars they buy, with Green Bay leaning toward domestic trucks while Pittsburgh purchases more fuel-efficient compact cars and crossovers.”
In fact, the list of Green Bay’s five best-selling units from 2010 was dominated by domestic trucks and SUVs, which took four spots on the list. The other model in the top five (Chevrolet Malibu at No. 4) was from a domestic OEM, as well.
Specifically, the Ford F-Series topped Green Bay’s list, with the Chevrolet Silverado at No. 2, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox in third. The Ford Escape placed fifth.
Further east in Pittsburgh, although the same two models topped the list (F-Series, Silverado), TrueCar pointed out that smaller, import brand still dominate. Spots No. 3-5 were all import models, including the Hyundai Elantra in third, the Hyundai Sonata at No. 4 and the Honda CR-V coming in fifth.
