CLEARWATER, Fla. -

A general manager at a Florida dealership group has taken his charitable fundraising efforts to new heights — literally.

GM Jim Surrett, of Lokey Volkswagen and Lokey Nissan, decided to plant himself atop the roof of his VW store on April 4 and has been there even since.

He is eating, working and living on the roof  —  all in the name of raising money for the families of three St. Petersburg, Fla., police officers who were shot in the line of duty.

Lokey aims to raise $150,000 and through press time on Thursday, he has generated $106,000. But even if the target  is reached early, Surrett doesn’t plan on coming down. The goal is to “raise as much money as possible,” officials emphasized.

“Family is not only very important to me, but to everyone in the Lokey organization. We are all deeply sorry for the losses of these officers and know their families need support,” he shared. “We want to do everything possible to help them not only now, but in the future. I plan on living on the roof every April to continue to raise money for these families.”

Lokey has been asking individuals and businesses for donations, which can be dropped off at the Lokey Nissan, VW and Kia stores. Lokey is also donating $500 for each vehicle sold during the month. The donations are in the respective names of the vehicle purchasers.
