Women in Retail: Robyn Jordan of DriveTime Automotive Group
Auto Remarketing is recognizing the 2022 Women in Retail honorees in the current issue of the magazine and at Used Car Week this fall in San Diego.
With these awards, we specifically recognize top leaders on the retail side of the auto industry, including honorees from dealerships, dealer groups and third-party providers/vendors.
Over the next few weeks, AR will be posting Q&As with each of the honorees on this website.
Next up is Robyn Jordan, who is head of people at DriveTime Automotive Group.
Auto Remarketing: What do you enjoy most about working in retail automotive, and what would you change?
Robyn Jordan: I thoroughly enjoy the people in this industry. There are so many talented individuals in retail automotive and the best part is that they all come from diff erent backgrounds. Once they get automotive in their blood, though, they’re here to stay!
There’s something uniquely wonderful in working with a diverse group of people who bring new perspectives to our challenges. Finding creative solutions to get the right customer, in the right car at the right deal terms is truly an art that is accomplished through working together. I would love to see more innovation in this space.
As retail automotive professionals, it’s our goal to find ways to meet the customer where they are. What an amazing thing it would be to provide a custom experience based on customers’ shopping patterns.
AR: What is the top trend you’re watching in retail automotive this year?
Jordan: The automotive industry is rapidly changing, and I don’t see that slowing down anytime soon. There are two trends in particular that I’m watching for that go hand-in-hand. One centers around affordability as we continue to see the impacts on supply chain and manufacturing affect cost. Two is the continued evolution of electric vehicles and technology, which defi nitely plays into affordability.
AR: What piece of career advice would you give your younger self?
Jordan: It is so important to be patient and soak everything in. Some words of wisdom that mentors are sharing with you may not make sense now, but I promise it will be extremely valuable one day. Keep your intellectual curiosity and ask questions — I cannot stress that enough. Also, don’t be afraid to admit when you are unsure of something. There are people to help you, guide you and answer the questions you have… Lean into it and take advantage of it! Build authentic relationships so you can always continue learning.
AR: What has been the top key to your success in retail automotive?
Jordan: It’s simple: listen to the people! As a human resources professional, I have found success through listening carefully and solving the right problems. Too often, we are searching for solutions before we have even identifi ed the issue. Listening with intent and compassion goes such a long way and allows us to bring innovation and engagement to the industry, which helps our people continue to do the same.
This industry is hard — take the time to learn from others and establish strong connections. Additionally, investing in future leaders through leadership development programs is invaluable. Once you equip leaders with the tools they need to serve their reports, you will fi nd an entire organization of motivated and happy employees. And that is true success!
