MIAMI -

A truckload of used inventory never made it to the front line. Instead the units met their fiery demise early Thursday morning.

A hauler filled with nine used vehicles exploded in Miami near State Road 112 and Okeechobee Road, according to a  report from the Miami Herald.

Miami Dade Fire Rescue arrived just before 2 a.m. to find the burning truck on the eastbound entrance ramp of State Road 112, also known as the Airport Expressway.

“When we arrived, the tractor was fully engulfed with four of the vehicles, which quickly spread to the rear,” Capt. Andy Alvarez told the Miami Herald in this report.

Alvarez went on to tell the newspaper that magnesium material common in vehicles nowadays created the most dangerous part of the incident. He explained that when the heated material comes into contact with water, it creates an “explosion type reaction.”

Sgt. Tom Pikul of the Florida Highway Patrol told the Herald that the driver was not injured, but all nine vehicles on the trailer were “a complete loss.”

Pikul added investigators are looking into the fire’s cause, which authorities at this point believe to be accidental.

Pikul noted that initial assessment points to truck’s wheels locking up and sparking the fire.

The report indicated SR-112 was closed for several hours while firefighters fought the blaze, but the road was undamaged and reopened before morning rush hour on Thursday.

Auto Remarketing's attempts to get more details from the Highway Patrol about what carrier was transporting these vehicles and the destiination dealership were unsuccessful late Thursday.

The Herald also has a video of the incident here, showing the hauler contained a mix of cars and trucks.
